StarStreet NBA Pick Five Tips: January 24, 2013

It’s been awhile, but I’m ready to get my fantasy basketball swerve back on here at DFSN. But first, baby steps. Here’s what I got going for Thursday Night’s NBA Pick Five over at StarStreet.

I’m going with Chandler in the first match-up against Vucevic. You’ll notice a trend if you keep reading as well since I think the Knicks put forth one of their best efforts in weeks in the Garden tonight. Tyson should have another monster outing on the glass versus the C’s weak rebounding frontline – he ripped down 17 boards in these rivals first meeting – and is coming off a stinker last time out versus Brooklyn.

No choice but to ride the “Truth” versus J.R. Smith as the former Jayhawk has made a nice living taking it to the Knicks throughout his storied playing career. He’s averaged 43.0 fantasy basketball points per game the L/4 times he faced them, and went for 33 fantasy points in the rivals first meeting a couple week’s back. I once again expect him to lead the Celtics in fantasy points in the rematch.

While the Suns have been the team to pick on when it comes to the power forward position, I can’t help but look in the direction of Carmelo Anthony who has a ton to prove in tonight’s bout with the division rival Cs. If you remember, KG got in his head in a major way in the team’s first go round, and because of it, he was taken completely off his game. Fireworks even erupted postgame in the locker room and team bus with Melo acting a fool. Time to make amends, and I expect him to do just that under the national spotlight.

If I’ve learned one thing while editing Crazy Horse’s NBA pieces this season, it’s that when consistent players enter a match-up off a stinker, you play them – no questions asked. Well, Afflalo will take to the home hardwood in Orlando off a game that saw him score no points, to go along with 5 assists, 9 boards, and a steal through 37+ minutes of work. The goose egg in scoring marked the first time he was held without a point all season long. With a favorable match-up against the Dinos, I expect him to blow up tonight!

The Magic enter this evening as the worst of the six teams in defending the point guard position. Calderon has averaged 28.6 FPPG versus the Magic in the conference rivals three previous meetings this season. Though Redick was just inserted into the starting line-up in Orlando’s last game, I’m not sure he sticks there and I’ve already determined that Afflalo is going to have a big bounce back game. With that the case, I’ll go with the more consistent Calderon who’s already flourished against the Magic this season.
